Traffic Accidents Killed Over 1,600 in 10 Months: Officials

The General Directorate of Traffic said that over 1,600 people died and more than 4,000 more were injured due to traffic accidents in the past ten months.

Officials at the directorate added that 976 of the fatalities are men, 192 are women and 447 are children.

“Around three thousand and 45 traffic accidents took place across the country which killed and injured a large number of people in the past ten months. We have programs underway to decrease the number of accidents in the country, which will be implemented across cities and highways,” said Abdul Wodud Khair Khwa, head of plans and policies at the directorate.

People and drivers believe that the absence of traffic signals and signs have led to a rise in the number of traffic accidents while the carelessness of drivers has also contributed to the numbers of accidents.

“People are in trouble for the lack of traffic signals in the country. The signals will help decrease traffic and traffic accidents,” said Naweed, a Kabul resident.

“People have given bribes for getting driving licenses during the previous government. It is not professional drivers that have caused an increase in the number of traffic accidents,” said Attaullah, a driver.

Earlier, the General Directorate of Traffic  said that they plan to install traffic signals across Kabul city.
