Engagement with Afghanistan De Facto Govt ‘Important’: Russia

The Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN said that the world’s engagement with the Islamic Emirate is important.

Speaking at a press briefing following the conclusion of the second Doha meeting on Afghanistan, Vasily Nebenzya said that although not recognized by Moscow, being engaged with Kabul is paramount.

“… We have no choice but to engage pragmatically with the de facto authorities of Afghanistan whom we did not recognize like nobody else. But the reality is there, we have to engage with those people who rule Afghanistan now,” said Vasily Nebenzya, the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN.

In the meantime, the foreign ministry of Qatar in a statement said that agreement on a logical path of engagement with Afghanistan is key.

On the sidelines of the meeting, representatives of many countries for Afghanistan discussed various issues regarding the country.

“The Islamic Emirate needs to engage in negotiations with the people of Afghanistan. The issues of human and women’s rights, are those that need to be resolved between the people and the government of Afghanistan inside the country rather than in international meetings,” said Rashid Qutbzada, a political analyst.

The secretary-general of the UN has expressed his gratitude to the PM and foreign minister of Qatar for hosting the second Doha meeting and said that the third Doha meeting will take place in near future.

The Islamic Emirate has not yet reacted to the results of the meeting.
